SPRINKLERS

Fire suppression systems, such as sprinklers, are necessary to contain fires, save lives, and minimize damage to property. Sprinkler systems have long been successfully used to protect lives and property, not just in residential buildings, but in industrial and commercial buildings as well. Extensive research confirms that fire sprinkler systems significantly improve the safety of occupants in the event of a fire

WHERE SHOULD FIRE SPRINKLERS BE INSTALLED?

Before the National Construction Code 2019 (NCC 2019), sprinklers were only compulsory in all residential dwellings above 25 metres in height. But with NCC 2019, it now requires that any new Class 2 and Class 3 buildings or any other class of building containing a part Class 2 or 3 section to have sprinklers installed throughout the building with 4 or more storeys and less than 25 metres in height.

These sprinkler systems need to be compliant with Australia Standards AS 2118.1 or AS 2118.4, or the newly developed FPA Australia Technical Specifications FPAA101D or FPAA101H.

The NCC 2019 also requires all Class 3 buildings used as “residential care buildings” to be sprinkler-protected regardless of size.

HOW DO FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS WORK?

A fire sprinkler is one of the main lines of defense against a fire. When a fire is present and it reaches a prescribed temperature the fire sprinkler system will activate within the affected area, dousing the area with a continuous supply of water until the system is disabled.

A fire sprinkler system is triggered by the extreme heat generated by fire. This system consists of several sprinkler heads, each with a temperature rated glass bulb. Each Sprinkler is attached to a pipe system, depending on the size of the building, these pipes may be connected to a diesel and/or electric pump or maybe directly plumbed into the main water supply. Some high-rise buildings not only have pumps to boost the pressure of the water supply but also have large water storage tanks that can hold over 100,000 litres of water.

The Australian Standards considers fire suppression (sprinkler) systems as an integral fire safety measure that can save lives and protect properties.
